Dear Friends, Colleagues, and Partners,
As 2024 draws to a close, it is time to reflect on the key milestones we've achieved over the past year. For Chapter Zero Kazakhstan, this year has been one of remarkable successes, strengthened partnerships, and active engagement with the climate agenda. We sincerely thank you for your support and collaboration on our journey toward sustainable development!
Key achievements of 2024:
The establishment of Chapter Zero Kazakhstan was an important step toward a sustainable future for Kazakhstan. By joining the global Climate Governance Initiative network, we laid a solid foundation for enhancing climate leadership and driving impactful actions in this direction.
We created a platform for the members of the board of directors to learn, exchange experiences, and receive support in implementing meaningful change. In partnership with McKinsey and KPMG, we hosted nine educational webinars, including sessions focused on the transition to a low-carbon economy, ESG strategies, risk management, and sustainable development. These initiatives equipped participants with practical tools and approaches to drive sustainability across various industries.
For members of the KazEnergy Association, we organized ESG training that reached over 180 participants. This series of webinars was specifically designed for senior executives to enhance their knowledge and skills in sustainable development. The webinars were delivered by experts from McKinsey & Company, KPMG, S&P Global, ORMEX, the World Bank, Ernst & Young, and the INSEAD Business School.
In collaboration with INSEAD, we held two sessions for Kazakhstani leaders on corporate governance and climate.
Chapter Zero Kazakhstan also made a valuable contribution to the work of the Accelerator of the Public Project Office under the Senate of the Parliament of Kazakhstan. Within the Sustainable Development Goal No.13: Climate Action, we developed proposals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, strengthen environmental awareness, and foster collaboration between business, government, and academia. A notable initiative was the National Climate Championship for companies and universities, planned for 2025.
Chapter Zero Kazakhstan actively participated in a major seminar organized by the World Economic Forum in Geneva, Switzerland. This event served as a key platform for showcasing Kazakhstan's commitment to sustainable development and addressing climate change on the global stage.
We also took part in a meeting organized by the OSCE Academy in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. Discussions focused on climate change, international cooperation, and joint initiatives to promote sustainable development. The meeting became a valuable platform for exchanging ideas and developing collaborative solutions.
We held a large-scale conference "The Path to Decarbonization, which brought together leading experts, business leaders, government representatives, and international organizations. The conference became a vital platform for discussing key strategies and initiatives in the field of green economy.
Our participation in COP29 in Baku was one of the year’s highlights. Chapter Zero Kazakhstan announced a significant step in promoting regenerative agriculture as part of Kazakhstan's climate strategy. At COP29, we signed a memorandum with the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Kazakhstan and Ormex, a French company specializing in sustainable agriculture. This agreement focuses on practices that promote carbon sequestration in soil, improve soil quality, and enhance water retention.
At COP29, we signed a memorandum of cooperation with ACWA Power, further strengthening our efforts in renewable energy. Earlier, the Chapter Zero Kazakhstan delegation visited Saudi Arabia to engage with ACWA Power and explore opportunities for collaboration in sustainable energy and water management.
Chapter Zero Kazakhstan hosted two unique events at COP29: the business game "Carbon Neutrality Scenario" and a session on preparing climate project pitches, bringing together participants from Central Asia, Azerbaijan, Israel, and other countries.
At the SPE Annual Caspian Technical Conference, Chapter Zero Kazakhstan signed a memorandum with Carbon Connect International. The agreement focuses on advancing climate governance, reducing methane emissions, and sharing best practices between Kazakhstan and Canada.
We are proud of our accomplishments and confident about the future. New challenges and opportunities await, reinforcing our commitment to sustainable development. Let 2025 be a year of decisive actions, constructive collaboration, and meaningful change.
Thank you for being with us on this journey! Together, we are shaping a sustainable future for Kazakhstan and the world.
Happy New Year!
Kindest regards,
The Chapter Zero Kazakhstan Team
